In 1989, the Soviet Union, due too severe social, economic, and political collapse, decided to invade Europe and then invade America. Wait, WHAT??? This is the alternate reality setting for the strategy game World In Conflict.
The game begins as you, First Lieutenant Parker (first name never stated), are on leave in Seattle when a disguised Soviet assault force arrives and begins an invasion. You, along with Captain Mark Bannon (whom you served with in Europe), lead a small resistance of regular army and National Guard troops. The Soviets force you to retreat, so you regroup with your commander, Colonel Jeremiah Sawyer (who also was with you in Europe), Colonel Wilkins, and many more troops. Together, you fight in several delaying battles until reaching the town of Cascade Falls. Here you must win, or the Soviets will learn the Star Wars project was a bluff and will launch nukes at America. In the end, the Soviet force is lured into the town by Bannon’s company, where they are nuked. Then, you go into a flashback, where you learn of Parker’s European service and why Sawyer hates Bannon. In the end, you come out of the flashback right after the nuking, and after many battles, retake Seattle.
Game play in World In Conflict is excellent, I love it. The game does not offer base-building or resource gathering. Instead, players are given a pre-determined amount of in-game reinforcement points to buy units. When a unit is destroyed, the points used to purchase it are slowly given back to the player, so reinforcements can be summoned to the fray. You can use a variety of armor, infantry, air (helicopters), and support units. Each unit has a special defensive and offensive ability. You also can use tactical aid like airstrikes and paratroopers. You can play as the USA or NATO in the single player campaign and play against the Soviets.
