I don’t believe that there is an end all, be all list that states the top ten video game of all time, but different people have their lists. I was perusing the various lists and was surprised to see that most of the games on the list are all fairly “old”, if one could consider a video game from the 1990s old.

What were some of the repeating top games? Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros., or some version of it, such as Super Mario Bros. 3, was on every single list. Nintendo also had  two other smashing hits, Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Brothers: Melee. The other top scorer by Nintendo was Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Also appearing on the various top lists were the various Final Fantasy games (such as numbers one through a million– just kidding) produced by Squaresoft in the mid-1990s.

Metal Gear by Konami, released in 1998, was also a very big favorite along with Super Metriod–yet another game by Nintendo. Resident Evil, a game I’ve never heard of, also appeared frequently and so did Goldeneye 007 by Rare. Another popular game was Street Fighter II.

Being a person who is not really into video games, I was happy to see that Tetris, Pac Man, and Space Invaders all had held their ground throughout the years.

I was very surprised to see that these lists, which were found in magazines such as Entertainment Weekly, IGN Reader’s Poll, Stuff Magazine (UK), and more did not contain more recent games such as Halo. Perhaps these games simply have not had enough time to claim their fame, but it would be interesting to see what the top video games are 10 years from now. In the meantime, I’ll let the boys on the floor reminisce about the good ‘ol games and their Super Nintendos.
