Time To Smash

Super Smash BrosHaving now played all three versions of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros I can say that I fully enjoy playing the oldest version the most out of the three in current existence. Despite all of the new areas, moves, items, characters, and more available in the new versions of the game, there is just something about the old graphics and moves that take me back to the good ol’ days. And let us face it, who doesn’t use the old levels in the new Brawl game anyway? For the current college crowd, thinking about those days of playing N64 sometimes is even more fun than playing the game itself. The old memories come flowing back about how you used to be so good with one certain player or how long it took you to complete one specific level. The best part about it is when you realize how you could complete that same level right now in about less than the a quarter of the time than it originally took you.

Yes, the harder degree of difficulty in levels, added characters, and new power moves can make the game more exciting, but personally the complications with learning the new controls and applying them to your favorite character outweigh all of those perks. For instance, Kirby? Kirby is absolutely fantastic in the N64 game, but when you play with this character in the new versions, Kirby is pretty much only worthwhile to a beginner player.

Let us talk about controllers. For instance, in my opinion, the Wii controllers are a complete mess. Having the A and B buttons on different sides of the stick have been a source of great annoyance when trying to access the arrows or 1 and 2 buttons for the special moves that I want to carry out. Also, having only one button, the “z button” to represent the two triggers on the typical game cube controllers definitely fudges your character’s shielding and grabbing ability.

If you are looking for a great Wii game, try Mario Baseball.
