LEGO has ventured out of blocks and into video games, which feature LEGO-man shaped characters and worlds created out of their signature building blocks. The first franchise they tackled was Star Wars. When I first heard about them doing this, I was skeptical. I didn’t see how they could incorporate blocks into something as iconic as Star Wars and make it fun to play.
It got great reviews and everyone I knew who had bought it for their children confessed that they enjoyed playing it as well. I finally bought it when a friend of mine, who had children around my son’s age, said that they loved playing it together and it made for entertaining “family fun nights.” So, I bought a copy of LEGO Star Wars II for my son for Christmas. Now I must join the ranks of people that were surprised at how much fun it is to play. My three-year-old loves it. We play it every night while he does his breathing treatments for asthma.
The cut scenes between levels are hilarious, and watching your favorite characters depicted as LEGO-men never gets tiring. They follow the storyline of the movies for the most part but add in silly and zany bits that really set it apart. The levels are pulled directly from the movies – you save Princess Leia from the Death Star, you watch as Han Solo is frozen in carbonite, and you battle alongside the Ewoks to destroy the shield generator so the second Death Star can be destroyed. LEGO also incorporated what they’re famous for – building. In every level there are piles of blocks that you must build.
Now LEGO is in production to make a LEGO Indiana Jones game and a LEGO Batman, and I can’t wait until they hit the shelves.
