I am a fan of Risk, always have been. It is a game that involves a little bit of luck, and a lot strategy. It is a game for those of us that love to think and employ tactics (especially when they work). However, it is not a game for those of us low on time. A game of Risk literally can take hours, and it is not always easy finding friends and family that are willing and able to play exactly when you are. Fortunately, there are a couple solutions:
Dominategame.com provides a free downloadable online version of Risk, and it is great! Mostly, I am thankful for the variety of options for game-play. Different people seem to have different rules for Risk, and this version accommodates this by allowing the users to select the objective they would like for the game. You also can choose your own map. (e.g. Instead of playing the entire globe you could play in just one continent.) There are generally about 1,000 users online, and there are also computer players available, so you will never be waiting for opponents. During the game, time limits can be set so you do not have to wait for slow thinkers. Because everything, such as the dice rolls, is run by the computer, the game runs much faster and can be over in as little as five minutes. Finally, a game of Risk you can finish!
Also, for those that have iTouch or iPhone, Lux Touch (free) or its expanded version Lux DLX ($7.99) are great applications that mimic the game of Risk. The graphics are colorful and clear, while the game is easy to maneuver. However, one of the drawbacks of this version is that your army placement is always randomized. Lux is produced by Silly Soft Games, and there is a full version online, but it costs $24.95.
I admit, playing against a computer or someone you do not know does not seem as fun as playing with your friends and relatives. Nevertheless, friends and relatives are not always available and Risk fanatics have to satisfy their craving somehow! Additionally, let’s admit it: sometimes we want a break playing with the people we know. Dominategame.com and Lux Touch are both awesome, free options.
