If you haven’t played a Civilization game, then…you’re perfectly normal. Yet, five years from now, you will probably be in a minority. Civilization Revolution was released on July 8th for the PS3, XBOX 360, and DS, which marks its first departure from the PC. Strictly console gamers soon will be part of its sphere of influence.
Imagine a meeting between Warcraft II and Sim City 3000. Subtract the annoying ogre voices and constant fund problems, and Sid Meyer’s Civilization will be staring you in the face like an enraged Roman soldier (many of which you will have to deal with in said game).
Any fan of the “God games” will love Civilization Revolution. Basically, you start out at the dawn of civilization along with a few other randomly determined opponents. Next, you begin building your empire, which includes building new cities, training soldiers, and advancing your country’s knowledge in order to advance technology. If you’re still alive after the industrial era, then it’s a race to see who can put a man on the moon first. What do you win? Just play it.
For those in the know when it comes to Civ games, there will be some surprises along with some disappointments. First of all, there are no custom maps here. Every game is played on a randomly generated world. Unless you’re very, very, very hesitant, these games will take a few hours at the most compared to its PC cousin’s week-long romps. Oh, and I hope you’re into cartoony looking characters.
Ah yes, and we’ve forgotten about the Nintendo DS version. Obviously the graphics and features couldn’t be nearly as powerful as Sony’s and Microsoft’s. This is quite true. While it’s graphics are simplified and it’s features are further stripped, it still feels like a Civilization game and is quite impressive for the massive shoes it has to fill in the end.
