11, 10, 9…
On 11/10/09, one of the most looked-forward-to video games will be released. “The largest entertainment launch of 2009” was how Janco Partners’ Mike Hickey described Modern Warfare 2 (initially called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2).
So far, Activision has released the plot behind Modern Warfare 2. Modern Warfare 2 is set several years after the conclusion of Call of Duty 4. Sergeant “Soap” MacTavish has returned as a Captain of the Special Air Service (He is a non-playable character). He is tasked to lead an elite, multinational counter terror force (Hmm…, elite, multinational counter- terror force. Rainbow Six, anyone?) called Task Force 141 in countering a re-emerging Russian ultra-nationalist organization. This is lead by Vladimir Makarovm, who worked with Imran Zakhaev. Makarovm has portrayed Zakhaev’s death as an act of martyrdom to gain support for his cause and has built a strong base in Russia. You will play as Sergeant Gary “Roach” Sanderson, a member of Task Force 141.
I have seen several videos of the game, including the video of the demo of the game at the E3 conference in Los Angeles. Also, during the NBA Eastern Conference finals, a teaser trailer was released. In this, the official name changed from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to Modern Warfare 2. The change has caused plenty of controversy. Robert Bowling, community manager at Infinity Ward, said to MTV that the game is called Modern Warfare 2 instead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare because they want to emphasize the fact that Modern Warfare is a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. He said, “This has never happened in Call of Duty before. They’re typically their own campaigns and totally unrelated to the previous one. This one, is indeed a direct sequel and we just want to make that clear.”
Also, the game will include online and cooperative game play. The online will be similar to the old version, and at E3, Infinity Ward announced a downloadable online pack is to be available on Xbox LIVE. The main campaign will not support cooperative play, but the “Special Forces” mode will have a two-player cooperative option.
And, if you want my thoughts, I think it looks wicked! So, let’s continue the countdown to 11/10/9. 140, 139, 138…
